4/18/2024

How do you remember your first TED Talk? The one with Ted and his pal Bill that was “most excellent” or the one where Bene Brown tells us to “dare greatly?” Whether you’re picturing two young guys in late 80s’ grunge or the acclaimed speaker on a big stage, it likely depends on your age.

While most of us may consider ourselves young at heart, we’re likely products of our generation and bring our generational values to most everything we do from parenting and financial planning to socializing and volunteering. These generational values transcend to the workplace as well.

BACKGROUND Most Foreign Medical Graduates (FMGs) complete medical school abroad and then match with a residency program in the United States. Upon matching, the vast majority are sponsored to come to the United States by their respective program in J-1 Status. I remember my first exposure to coding many years ago.  I could get by with some minimal knowledge as an implementation/salesperson for an EHR vendor, but I immediately grew such an appreciation for the complexity of the craft of coding.  Now, with all of the regulatory requirements, ICD-10 which expanded the diagnosis base 10 fold or more, bundling, unbundling, I appreciate even more those that chose coding as a profession.

When I first stepped foot in the Virginia Garcia Memorial Health Center a year ago, I didn’t speak an ounce of medical Spanish. Sure, I had spent several years abroad, becoming proficient in the language, but terms like “blister,” “wort,” “bladder,” and “heartburn” eluded me. My medical vocabulary was abysmal, and as a result, I relied on an interpreter to communicate with the clinic’s predominantly Spanish-speaking patients.
