This webpage provides a comprehensive library of tools, resources, and education to educate health center staff and empower them to educate patients on health literacy issues.The newly insured are also new to the health and health insurance landscape. Studies have shown that even individuals who have had coverage for some time and are familiar with the health system, still face challenges in understanding their coverage and care. Understanding insurance and health terminology is critical in ensuring individuals make the most of their coverage and make informed decisions regarding their care.

Tools & Materials for Educating Patients

  • Health Insurance Quiz - Presented by the Kaiser Family Foundation, this quiz allows consumers to test their health insurance knowledge, and provides correct information when a question is answered wrongly
  • How to Make the Most of Your Health Insurance – Provides an overview on how to take advantage of a health plans coverage.
  • Choosing Prescription Drugs – Provides an overview of how to choose prescription drugs: generic vs. brand named and cost saving strategies.
  • How Health Insurance Works- Provides an overview to help individuals understand how the health insurance system works.
  • Types of Plans – Provides an overview of the most common types of plans (HMO, PPO, Medicare, etc) including coverage and cost comparisons.
  • From Coverage to Care Program - The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services initiative to help people with new health care coverage understand their benefits and connect to primary care and the preventive services that are right for them. Resources include fact sheets, training videos and brochures available in multiple languages.
  • I'm Covered, Now What? - A simple brochure that educates the newly insured on the main components of coverage and common health terminologies. This can be distributed to the newly insured during enrollment appointments. These are state specific and available in Spanish.
