Lisa Nelson walked into Unity Care NW on May 22nd, 2013 to start a new pharmacy program.  She had a business plan and a pharmacy design put together by the Executive Director, and if that doesn’t make you shudder in horror, I have a Steven King story for you.  Remarkably, Lisa opened the pharmacy on October 15th 2013 and today it is filling an average 240 scripts per day.

Lisa and her pharmacy staff greatly contribute to improving the health of Unity Care NW’s patients.  She created a sliding fee scale that has made medications much more affordable not only for our uninsured patients, but also for those with commercial insurance and Medicare Part D insurance who can take advantage of our sliding fee scale during their deductible period or if our sliding fee scale is more affordable than their required co-pays.

Lisa sets high standards.  On our patient satisfaction surveys, patients rate their satisfaction with our pharmacy services as a 3.7 on a scale of 1 to 4 in which 4 is “very satisfied”.  One of Lisa’s pharmacy staff commented, “ Jeez, that’s the best grade point average I ever got.”  On a recent surprise inspection by the Board of Pharmacy, Lisa’s pharmacy received 100% of the possible points on the inspection.

Unity Care serves nearly all of the patients with HIV infection in Whatcom and Skagit and we have started treating patients with Hepatitis C through our participation with the ECCO program at the University of Washington.  The Pharmacy is a key to helping patients with complex diseases obtain and adhere to complex and expensive medication regimes.

Pharmacy staff manages the refill protocol for all of our patients.  They are starting to handle pre-authorizations and we expect to ultimately have the pharmacy manage an anti-coagulation clinic. Our entire pharmacy staff is integral to the success of the program; Lisa’s leadership, high standards, commitment to the welfare of patients and great work are a beacon to all Unity Care staff and patients.
