ICD-10 Delay – What Does This Mean for CHCs?

I heard that the ICD-10 cutover date got pushed a year. Previously we were being told by CMS that the compliance date would not change. What happened; and, more importantly, what does this mean for my clinic and providers?

Yes, the date got pushed. However, understand that the date was not changed by CMS, but by Congress. On April 1, the President signed into law the Protecting Access to Medicare Act (PAMA) into law. PAMA delays implementation of the sustainable growth rate (SGR) formula by one year, but more importantly it postpones the ICD-10 cutover date until Oct. 1, 2015. These delays may seem like good tidings for those ill-prepared to move into a new era of healthcare. After all, the tremendous reengineering, cultural adjustment and change management demanded of clinics today leaves little time for practicing medicine. It’s better for practices to maintain the status quo, right?

Not if you want to succeed over the long term. Not if you want to be a good steward of the health care dollar. And certainly not if you want to deliver the highest quality care to patients.

Depending on your motivations, patches and delays by Congress will make no difference. Let us start by recognizing just what was intended with the SGR.
