It’s coming. Health care reform is moving into full bloom. As the shift progresses, volume will be replaced by value as the determinant of physician compensation, and those who are well prepared will succeed. Providers will be rewarded for actually meeting various quality measures, not just reporting them. Failure to meet these quality standards could place your practice at risk for survival in the transition. Governmental and commercial payers will provide incentives for reducing care costs. And, early adopters will benefit most from the transition; ultimately, shared savings will dwindle as lower costs of care become the norm on which future reimbursements are based.

So what can you do to prepare and position for the shift to value? You can be prepared. Use technology to serve you so that you can serve your patient. Strive to deliver patient-centered care by becoming a medical home and focusing on patient engagement. Leverage your EHR data to measure and improve upon performance. In today’s complex health care environment amidst the shift to value-based reimbursement, providers are under enormous pressure to improve quality and efficiency of health care delivery. Health information technology holds the potential to help providers achieve these goals by improving interoperability of health care information, boosting patient engagement, improving care coordination and more.

The following is a readiness checklist to assist in evaluating, planning and positioning for health care reform. Use this tool to assess your strategic rank and tactical options as we move into 2014.
