I am a 2009 graduate of Arizona School of Dentisty and Oral Health (ASDOH) and participated in the program as a dental student.  I did four rotations, 4-6 weeks each, in Arizona, Montana, and Washington.  Because of my rotation at Columbia Basin Health Association in Othello, WA, I began looking for job opportunities in Washington state, since my experience in a Washington health center had been so positive.

During my last month in dental school I discovered that Community Health of Central Washington was opening its first dental clinic.  I applied, and I was fortunate enough to be hired as its new dental director right out of school, due in part  to my background in Public Health Dentistry.  After establishing the clinic and patient base for the first two years I reached out to ASDOH and applied to be a rotation site for senior dental students. Our application was accepted and we are pleased to have been a rotation site for two years now.  We worked with three students last year and have just completed working with our first of three students this year.

Organizations  interested in becoming a potential fourth-year rotation site should apply directly to ASDOH.  This A.T. Still University site details the site requirements for applying. Fourth-year dental students at ASDOH choose which sites they want to go to, so this makes it a competitive process among sites vying for dental students.  ASDOH has dozens of rotation sites across the country that students can choose from.  The more the site can offer the student in housing, living stipend, and clinical experiences, the more competitive they will be in being selected by the students.  Sites can host multiple students per rotation up to eight rotations a year depending on the site's ability to host students and student demand for the site.

In July 2013, Community Health of Central Washington issued this announcement of its new Ellensburg Dental Clinic student program:

Community Health of Central Washington (CHCW) is pleased to announce that its Ellensburg Dental Clinic has become an approved site for senior dental students completing their clinical training.  As an approved training site, the Ellensburg Dental Clinic will host three student rotations throughout the year, serving one dental student per rotation.

The dental student program is credentialed with Arizona School of Dentistry and Oral Health/A.T. Still University and accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation as part of the American Dental Association.

The dental students will provide outpatient services at Ellensburg Dental Clinic and receive both didactic and clinical training in the disciplines of restorative dentistry, prosthodontics, periodontics, endodontics, children’s dentistry, oral and maxillofacial surgery.

The Ellensburg Dental Clinic is honored to have Anthony Okoli, DMD, MPH candidate, as one of its first dental students. He is a fourth year dentistry student at Arizona School of Dentistry and Oral Health/A.T. Still University.Okoli received his undergraduate degree in public health and economics from the University of Southern California. He is currently seeing patients at the Ellensburg Clinic through the end of his clinical rotation.

The dental student program provides educational experiences to meet the requirements listed by the American Dental Association Commission on Accreditation, focusing on comprehensive care in a rural community.  A patient’s ability to pay is not a factor in the student completing a comprehensive treatment plan for a patient.  Therefore, the dental student will have ample opportunity to render fixed prosthodontic care as well as molar endodontics and operative dentistry.  All aspects of dentistry are practiced and student work with a chair side assistant in developing their own daily patient schedule.

“We strive to provide students with an enriched educational experience” says Dr. Brenden Davis, DMD, MPH, Dental Director, Ellensburg Dental Clinic, Community Health of Central WA.  “We also enjoy a great working relationship with Arizona School of Dentistry and Oral Health and have been very please with the expertise and skills of the students when they arrive for their rotation.”
