JAMHI Health and Wellness, Inc. has been providing comprehensive, person-centered community behavioral health services to Alaskans for over 34 years and is Juneau’s state-designated community mental health center for adults in Juneau, Gustavus, Tenakee Springs and Elfin Cove Alaska.  Still, there’s much more!  The organization was first incorporated in 1985 as JAMI, Juneau Alliance for the Mentally Ill; a grass-roots coalition composed primarily of parents of adults with severe mental illness who were focused on ensuring there was safe, affordable housing for their family members and others.  The organization evolved through several name and role changes including JAMI/NAMI (when affiliated with the National Alliance for Mental Illness) and JAMHI (Juneau Alliance for Mental Health, Inc.).  As names evolved, so did Juneau’s service array both internal and external to the organization.

  • In 1995 the City and Borough of Juneau divested of the direct provision of social services and JAMHI took over, building the capacity to provide both clinical and rehabilitation levels of care for adults with severe mental illness as well as those in our community with general mental health needs.
  • In 2007 JAMHI earned accreditation through CARF International and remains accredited today with the board of directors also applying CARF’s optional governance standards.  Accredited programs include integrated case management/services coordination, community housing, crisis intervention and outpatient treatment; all integrated service lines for people with substance use disorders and mental health needs, as well as integrated behavioral health and primary care services.
  • In 2014 JAMHI worked with Dartmouth College’s InShape program, creating the capacity for JAMHI to employ certified fitness trainers working with people with severe mental illness to improve their health and contributing to research around wellness for people with severe mental illness.  JAMHI’s capacities developed through this grant are maintained today and even became part of our name!
  • In 2015 JAMHI received a Substance Abuse Mental Health Administration (SAMHSA) grant to integrate primary (physical) health care into its service array and began providing integrated primary care services to people served in JAMHI’s behavioral health services.
  • In 2017 JAMHI was invited by the Juneau Housing First Collaborative to establish a clinic on-site at Juneau’s Forget-Me-Not Manor, a 32-unit affordable housing complex founded on the Housing First model and serving people who have been homeless in Juneau on average, about 9 years.  JAMHI’s Midtown Clinic was established to provide integrated primary care and behavioral health services not only to residents, but also to ANYONE of ANY AGE in the community who needs affordable health care based on JAMHI’s sliding fee scale.
  • In January 2018 local substance use disorder prevention and treatment program the National Council on Alcohol and Drug Dependence – Juneau Chapter, a non-profit that had been serving Juneau since 1965, merged with JAMHI to become JAMHI Health & Wellness, Inc. and clinical services immediately expanded into intensive outpatient services (IOP) and medically assisted treatment (MAT) for substance use disorders.

Just recently, in partnership with Genoa Healthcare, a fulltime pharmacy has been physically co-located on-site at the JAMHI Health & Wellness Midtown Clinic, in Juneau’s Lemon Creek area as well.

Today JAMHI Health & Wellness, it’s active, giving board of directors of 9 and competent, caring staff of 64 provide a comprehensive array of specialty services including community housing and support services (serving about 70 people with individualized levels of support, throughout a variety of community settings), behavioral health services including integrated mental health and substance use disorder services (serving about 700; 250 in clinic and 450 in rehabilitation services), psychiatric emergency services (providing over 700 contacts per year), prevention and wellness services for adults with mental illness substance-use, co-occurring disorders (serving about 120) as well as primary care services (serving well-over 600).  Notably, all JAMHI’s integrated services are documented through one integrated electronic health record system.  Combined, JAMHI Health & Wellness serves over 1500 of our friends and neighbors annually and in active pursuit of our mission of: ‘helping people live their own best lives’.
