2015 Fall Primary Care Conference

fall primary care conference programTheme: Get Your Second Wind in Seattle!
Location: Seattle, Washington
Dates: October 17 - 20, 2015
Monday Plenary Keynote Address by Former Assistant U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Marilyn Hughes Gaston

About 500 happy conference-goers got their “second wind in Seattle” in October at the Hyatt at Olive 8 in downtown Seattle. It was another fine iteration of the annual “Region 18” Fall Primary Care Conference co-produced by NWRPCA and CHAMPS in partnership with the Western Clinicians Network. This year attendees hailed from 21 states, the two largest groups being health center CEOs/EDs or directors/managers. As always, health center board members made up the next-largest contingent. Washington and Oregon took the honors as the states with the strongest representation, but Alaska was a strong third, followed by Montana.

Thirty-two corporate and nonprofit organizations provided financial support as sponsors or exhibitors, including UnitedHealthcare Community Plan, the Presenting Sponsor. Amerigroup of Washington provided substantial support as the Champion Sponsor, and both Visualutions and Colorado Community Health Network contributed as Supporting Sponsors.

Former Assistant U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Marilyn Gaston ignited the crowd with her salute to the 50th anniversary of the CHC movement. Entitled “The Revolution Continues,” Gaston’s keynote address was delivered at an energy level equal to the subject matter. One attendee commented, “Dr. Gaston’s talk made the whole day worthwhile.” Sallie Thieme Sandford, JD, of the University of Washington, closed the conference with “The ACA after King v. Burwell: What now for primary and preventive care,” a practical update that brought wisdom from her two areas of expertise: healthcare and the law.

Of the 51 breakout sessions offered, these were some that garnered the greatest praise: “Mindfulness Training in Preventing Provider Burnout, Improving Retention, and Enhancing Patient Care” (Lisa Hardmeyer Gray); “The Health IT Value Trifecta” (Adele Allison); “Managing Chronic Pain: New Guidelines and Facilitated Peer Sharing” (Dr. Mark Sullivan and Dr. Malcolm Butler); “Crisis Communication and Reputation Management in a Social Media Cycle” (Marisol Murphy-Ballantyne); and “CHC Self-Pay Payment: Maximize the Opportunity” (Ray Jorgensen).

The next annual Fall Primary Care Conference will take place in Denver October 15-18, 2016.

2014 Fall Primary Care Conference

fall primary care conference programTheme: Practice Transformation: Fulfilling the Promise
Location: Denver, Colorado
Dates: October 19 - 22, 2014
Keynote Address by Michael Lovdal, Partner at Oliver Wyman, Dr. Julian Perez, Sea Mar's Burien Community Health Centers

Thank you to all who attended and contributed to the 2014 Fall Primary Care Conference. More than 500 individuals gathered in Denver for the 2014 Fall Primary Care Conference in partnership with CHAMPS and Western Clinicians Network. We took the opportunity to unveil our new Region 18 brand, which is now officially unofficial.

Eighty-four health centers were represented at the gathering, and 26 allied health organizations were also present as participants or speakers. Six universities and eleven public health agencies, along with ten primary care associations and three federal agencies were part of the mix. Thirty-two vendors with products or services for health centers rounded out the group. The largest contingent came from Sunrise Community Health Center in Colorado, followed by a large group representing Denver Health.

In conjunction with the conference, two major courses, one new and one perennially popular, provided critical training to large groups of attendees.

These were NACHC’s "New Medical Directors’ Training" and the pilot of NWRPCA’s "Primary Care/Public Health Inter-Professional Leadership Development" course, created in conjunction with the NW Center for Public Health Practice at the University of Washington.

A blue ribbon panel provided instruction to 58 CHC leaders in the leadership course, which NWRPCA intends to grow and develop in coming years. Michael Lovdal of Oliver Wyman offered a riveting, fast-paced opening keynote on organizational partnering and positioning, and Dr. Julian Perez of Sea Mar CHC closed the conference with an inspiring report on his work to address the social determinants of health by partnering with local legal assistance providers.
