David Keene, LCSW at Latah Community Health, shines as a Behavioral Health Provider.  Dave has played a huge role in the success of further integrating behavioral health and primary care in our clinic.  He does this by working with the primary care providers to ensure that our patients receive the services needed to support their mental and social well-being, including ongoing availability for crisis intervention.

He attends huddles with the primary providers each morning to enhance the success of our Integrated Behavioral Health model.  I most appreciate that he knows that when it comes to Behavioral Health – one size does not fit all.  He is able to adapt his therapy to meet the problems of the patient.

Dave stays up to date on services in the community and is able to connect patients to other regional health and social service providers to best meet their needs.  He recently has become our organization-wide champion for “BH Consults” commonly known as warm hand offs, which models the type of integrated care we strive for. These same day appointments are built into his schedule template to allow dedicated time for Behavioral Health Providers to meet and greet patients seeing their primary care provider who has recommend counseling or requested follow-up for an identified behavioral health (BH) need.  This approach has significantly increased the amount of patients who schedule a BH appointment before leaving the clinic.  Also, since starting same day BH Consult appointments, many patients now know that if they are having a crisis that they can come by the clinic and Dave will have some time during the day to assist even if it is only for 15 minutes.

Recently, our clinic added dental services and a dental patient who came to their appointment was very distraught and upset.  The Dental Assistant came over to the medical wing asking what to do as she felt terrible that the patient was in tears.  I asked Dave if he could take a minute to go over to dental to help out.  He walked over to dental and was able to spend 15 minutes with the patient giving the patient direction and assistance she needed. Dave is great example of what it takes work in a Community Health setting!
