Forum History

2014 Western Forum for Migrant and Community Health

Theme: Re-Imagining Healthy Communities
Location: Seattle, Washington
Dates: February 26-28, 2014
Keynote Address by Rishi Manchanda, physician and author

The Western Forum for Migrant and Community Health broke records again in 2014, with more than 300 registered, 20 exhibitors in the hall, 32 breakout sessions and three plenary sessions. Rishi Manchanda, author of The Upstream Doctors, kicked off the event to a packed house. Using the classic public health parable – “the upstream story of prevention” – to guide his presentation, Dr. Manchanda challenged the audience to think differently about the healthcare provider’s role in addressing the social determinants of health. On Thursday Seth Holmes walked the audience through the fascinating research behind his book, Fresh Fruit, Broken Bodies, for which he lived and harvested alongside indigenous migrant farmworkers in the Skagit Valley of Washington state. The Forum concluded with a captivating presentation by Laura Porter of Comprehensive Health Education Foundation (CHEF) on Adverse Childhood Experiences.
